Unesco advisers who visited Amsterdam in relation to the city’s nomination for its historic city center and canal belt to be placed on the World Heritage Sites list are shocked by the huge ads and video screen they encountered.

Scaffolding advertising has long been controversial, with most people saying they are an eyesore.

In some cases they are a mixed blessing, really, as they sometimes cover up ugly buildings that somehow were allowed to be built.

The photo was taken at Singel canal. The houses shown line the floating flower market.

“The heraldic origins of the coat of arms of Amsterdam are unknown. The black banner in the centre could represent the water on which the city is located.

The three St. Andrew’s crosses may stem from the Persijn crusader family from Waterland, which owned a considerable amount of land in and around Amsterdam.
